Review: LogMeIn Ignition
Review: LogMeIn Ignition

“If it’s on your computer, it’s just a touch away!”

With this slogan, LogMeIn does present the mobile version LogMeIn Ignition for iPhone, and do believe us: this app rocks.

After installing the LogMeIn Ignition app on your iPhone, you will have instantly access to your desktop, to all your applications and every file on your computers/servers wherever you are, as if you were sitting in your office. Except you’re not (psst, don’t tell anyone): actually you’re on the go and wearing torned jeans.

How does it work?

Getting started

Browse to https://secure.logmein.com/US/home.aspx and create a LogMeIn account. This step is well-guided and takes less than 5 minutes.
Install the LogMeIn Ignition client on the systems where you want to have access to. This application is available for free at https://secure.logmein.com/US/products/ignition/download.aspx. To install the client tool just run the 2 minutes dummy-proof install wizard (available for Windows & Mac OSX).
Install the LogMeIn Ingnition app on your iPhone.
Log into your account from your iPhone and click the computer you want to control. You’ll see its desktop and you are able to use all the applications on the remote system.

Controls

Despite the small iPhone screen, you can simple control the remote system. It is obvious that you will have to zoom in and out sometimes to see the details better on the little screen, but with the pinching of your fingers this is very usable. Typing is fairly with the on-screen iPhone keyboard for short sessions. To use the mouse you will have to move the screen around, it stays centered on the screen. Very smartly integrated and you get used to it quickly.

3G

LogMeIn for the iPhone is best utilized over a Wi-Fi connection. What was surprising in our test, is that even over a 3G network connection the application is very usable. The remote screen comes up very fast. Over slower connection like Edge you will have to wait a bit longer but sometimes this is the only thing you have to support your clients, which is better then driving to them for a few mouse clicks.

Live session in screens

Since images speak louder than words, hereunder you will find a detailed LogMeIn session.

Conclusion

Despite the hefty price tag, LogMeIn is our recommended tool for remote controlling Servers and Computers remotely on the iPhone. LogMeIn has managed to make it also possible to manage the remote desktop easy, and in an innovative way. We are looking forward to test the iPad version!
