With the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate requiring commercial drivers to digitally manage their time behind the wheel (Hours of Service or HOS) just six short months away, the launch of LogBook for iOS by Fleetmatics, a Verizon company, puts HOS management in the palms of drivers’ hands.
Fleetmatics LogBook manages drivers’ HOS by combining critical data from the vehicle with status updates made in the mobile application by the driver. Drivers simply log into the mobile app and start driving while their HOS are logged automatically. Dispatchers and back-office teams also benefit from real-time HOS status, violation alerts, Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) and more through Fleetmatics’ web-based interface.
Greenlight has created a market disruptive technology that enables the smartphone as a connected platform in the car. The Greenlight platform consists of a dash-mounted SmartCradle, paired with its Dashware app, which enables the phone to record driving video footage alongside driving data. The phone is also safely stored and charged while in the SmartCradle, without disrupting access to features like music, maps, and communications.
Greenlight provides a smarter alternative to dash cameras at a fraction of the cost of stand-alone cameras. The Greenlight product offers a solution on the platform that consumers are most comfortable with: their mobile phone.
Chimo Applications Inc. announced the launch of Version 1.0 of their new vehicle-to-vehicle messaging platform, available on all compatible iOS and Android devices. For the first time, vehicle owners have the ability to message other vehicle owners anonymously through the registered Chimo user’s license plate.
In addition to the application’s core messaging technology, Chimo also features a social alerts add-on, which allows users to post location-based messages to other vehicle owners in the area.
“We are very happy to introduce this new medium of communication,” said founder and CEO Saul Segall. “We believe Chimo will allow users to avoid certain undesirable situations, like a parking ticket, heavy traffic areas, auto theft, and many more scenarios. We wanted to give people the opportunity to be social with the vehicles they spend so much time in and around.”
Today INRIX, Inc., the world leader in connected car services and movement analytics, released a completely redesigned version of INRIX Traffic for iOS and Android. INRIX Traffic is a next-generation navigation and traffic app that learns user preferences to take the guesswork out of driving. The app integrates with a user’s calendar and learns their driving habits to create a personalized itinerary that includes automatic alerts, anticipated trips, favorite destinations and preferred routes.
Available worldwide now in the Apple App Store and Google Play, INRIX Traffic learns routines and preferences as users go about their day. INRIX Traffic adds favorite places automatically instead of requiring users to spend time inputting destinations like home, work or school. Based on learned activities, it creates a daily, driver-specific itinerary of anticipated trips, as well as frequent and preferred routes. By accessing calendar information on a mobile device, the app also adds events with addresses to the daily driving itinerary.
The VINET is stand-alone head-up display using a transparent OLED screen to illustrate vital driving information including; navigation, speed, mpg, rpm, phone messages and more, helping drivers safely keep their eyes on the road. The VINET’s on-board diagnostic (OBD II) adapter seamlessly sends vehicle data via Bluetooth to the HUD as well to the driver’s smartphone through the VINET companion app.
The VINET app analyzes driving habits, making recommendations to help owners be more economical with their driving by sending alerts for navigating shorter routes and suggesting time, fuel and money saving tips.
Governor Tom Wolf today announced travel information available for Pennsylvania roadways is being expanded through a free, two-way data-sharing partnership between the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and Waze (http://www.waze.com), a real-time crowdsourced navigation app through which drivers share road conditions.
“As travelers rely more and more on their smartphones for real-time traffic data, this new partnership represents yet another way PennDOT is modernizing to keep up with the demands of its customers,” Governor Wolf said.
The new inRoute 4 is the first voice guided navigation app to automatically check your route for severe weather! Previously featured on the TODAY show and by Apple as a Best New App in Navigation, inRoute’s route planner - with automatic order optimization and custom routes based on elevation, weather, curviness and more - has now been coupled with a voice navigation upgrade that detects severe weather ahead on the route.
This new release also features: Using Spotlight search to start navigating saved routes; view real-time traffic and road closures that affect routing; and support for the iPad Pro’s resolution.
Singapore’s home-grown pioneer in real-time traffic and connected navigation, Quantum Inventions, has brought its award-winning navigation experience to iOS by launching Galactio SG GPS Navigation and Traffic. Available on the Google Play store since February 2014, the android version of Galactic has been well received by users, garnering an average rating of 4.0.
Galactic, the first of its kind app, fully integrates real-time information such as traffic incidents, traffic camera images, parking rates and availability and fuel prices.
The buying argument for the ‘iPhone 6 plus’ over of the regular ‘6’ is the big screen of course—next to the better camera—it really shines in some areas like displaying route information when you’re on a trip. The smaller display sized iPhones make it quite hard to see all the little details, like street names and Point of Interests.
Recently we published about how the Navigon for iOS GPS app (version 2.9) has been optimized to take advantage of the bigger 6 plus screen. For those of you who want to complete their in car 6 plus experience any time soon, here is a nice suggestion for a nice car mount. They come in multiple colors, I like the white because my previous black Navigon Design Car Kit has melted by the sun on an average spring day.
For around $100 you can possibly safe your life in a car crash. Automatic the tiny new device that you can plug into the diag-port (OBD-II) of any car built after 1996, records all the live data from the computers in your car. The cool thing is that it can detect a collision and call for help with the Crash Alert live agent. This service is available 24/7 in the U.S. with no recurring fees at all.
That is just one of the most important features, at least if you ask me. Automatic is packed with cool and fun stuff like it remembers where you parked, even after a heavy night out your iPhone tells you that you aren’t parked in the obvious location but somewhere else because there was no place free in front of your house.
Automatic can even interact with other apps and has an API where other soft and hardware developers can hook into.
