iTunes GPS Apps sales statistics - Newcomers TomTom and CoPilot doing surprisingly well
iTunes GPS Apps sales statistics - Newcomers TomTom and CoPilot doing surprisingly well

CoPilot Live Europe Edition has just been released a few days ago and is rushing into the App Store already. I checked every european apps store today (plus Turkey and the US) to measure the Top-100 position of Navigon, TomTom, Sygic, iGO My way 2009, CoPilot and G-Maps. All of these are Turn-By-Turn Voice Guided GPS applications.

After reviewing TomTom myself and only giving it 3 out of 5 stars, it is a little bit shocking that they are selling already so well. They do not have technologies like Lane Assistance and Real Sign Posts. The maps look dull with psychedelic colors and it brings no new innovation to the iPhone platform. It must be because of the big marketing campaigns, and their acquired top position in the PND market that makes it sell on the iPhone so well. Note that it is also the most expensive app for the Europe Edition.

What I learned from it is that there is a lot of product segmentation for Sygic, Navigon and TomTom. iGO and CoPilot only have a few editions.

The Graph shows the position in the App Store of the West European Countries. The higher the bar is, the better the ranking in the App Store Top-100. Let’s have a closer look at the figures behind this graph.

TomTom

TomTom is new to the app store, and the big name they have is selling, they are doing very good already and are fighting with Navigon for the first position. TomTom has no market yet in Eastern Europe of course because of their Western Europe edition. With 10 of their editions they have 45 Top-100 rankings.

Editions in the Top-100 are:

App       Price/Euro Edition Ranks in Top-100

TomTom 99,99 Western Europe 15
TomTom 69,99 BeNeLux 3
TomTom 69,99 France 1
TomTom 79,99 USA and Canada 13
TomTom 69,99 Iberia 2
TomTom 69,99 D-AU-CH 2
TomTom 69,99 Italy 1
TomTom 69,99 Nordic 4
TomTom 62,99 Australia 2
TomTom 79,99 UK and Ireland 2

Navigon

Navigon is selling well in almost all European countries, with their EU edition and also with the Eastern Europe edition. Surprisingly their North American Edition is also selling strong in Europe. With 11 of their editions they have 65 and farout the most app store Top-100 rankings.

Editions in the Top-100 are:

App       Price/Euro Edition Ranks in Top-100

Navigon 79,99 Europe 25
Navigon 49,99 BeNeLux 2
Navigon 49,99 FR 1
Navigon 54,99 North America 16
Navigon 42,99 Australia 2
Navigon 69,99 Iberia 2
Navigon 69,99 D-AU-CH 2
Navigon 69,99 Italy 1
Navigon 49,99 Eastern Europe 9
Navigon 49,99 Nordic 4
Navigon 69,99 UK and Ireland 1

Sygic

Sygic is also selling in the whole of Europe but has lower rankings to my surprise. It is a very good application, has lane assistance and sign posts, and is the most configurable app. It sells in 9 countries also other versions than the Europe edition and with 6 of their editions they have a reasonable 30 Top-100 rankings. Unlike TomTom but like Navigon it is selling in East European countries. With their Russian edition, they are selling in Poland a 66th position and Slovenia 72nd. The Brazilian edition is selling in Spain on spot 43 and strangely not in the Top-100 in Portugal. Sygic has also announced further improvements which will help them to stay strong in the store.

Editions in the Top-100 are:

App       Price/Euro Edition   Ranks in Top-100

Sygic 74,99 Europe     21
Sygic 62,99 SE Asia     2
Sygic 79,99 Brazil     1
Sygic 31,99 North America   2
Sygic 39,99 UK       2
Sygic 79,99 Russia     2
* note that the prices will change per Sept 1, 2009 for the promo editions.

Eastern Europe Chart, note the absence of TomTom.

iGO My way 2009

iGO is selling reasonable with their 2 different versions, Europe and Western Europe, they are also new to the store, and doing quite good. With 3 of their edtions they have 35 Top-100 rankings. iGo My way 2009, has a lot of improvements announced which will probably give them even more market share in the future. We will cover them in-depth here in the coming days.

Editions in the Top-100 are:

App Price/Euro Edition     Ranks in Top-100

iGO 89,99 Europe     18
iGO 69,99 Western Europe 13
iGO 62,99 North America     4

CoPilot Live

CoPilot is rushing into the app store with very strong sales the first days, 3 of their editions have 23 Top-100 rankings already. They have a 16th place in Belgium. In the UK and Ireland they are leading, but also already for some time in the app store. The first reactions from our reviewers are not so positive for the North American Edition, but we will publish them later this week officially.

Editions in the Top-100 are:

App       Price/Euro Edition     Ranks in Top-100

CoPilot 79,99 Europe     15
CoPilot 27,99 North America   5
CoPilot 33,99 United Kingdom 3

G-Map

G-Map, not know by many people, it is oriented on the US market, and 2 of their versions (US West and US East) have 6 Top-100 rankings.

Editions in the Top-100 are:

App       Price/Euro Edition   Ranks in Top-100

G-Map 27,99 US West   5
G-Map 27,99 US East 1

Other conclusions

iGO Europe edition, is also covering Turkey and that is paying off. Newcomer CoPilot is doing this too I guess, because it is scoring a 64th postion there.
iGO North America is selling in the Top-100 in East European countries but has no Top-100 entry in the USA yet.

Segmentation is the way to go, just split Europe in big parts and countries, like Nordic, Iberia, Germany-Austria and Switzerland, to name just a few. TomTom and Navigon have done a good job with this. The starting success of CoPilot Live can be because of the free live link location sharing feature. Or is it because of the other new Live features like Live traffic, announced for UK (1st rank), Germany (29), Spain(41), Netherlands(13) and US(41)?

Please enlighten me and leave your comment.
