Send SMS messages from OS X via your iPhone

From iOS 8.1 and OS X 10.10 Yosemite, Apple has introduced the option to SMS directly from within the OS X Messages application. Some users have problems to set this up correctly. Here are some tips that might help you.

1. Make sure that on your iPhone and OS X you are logged in with the same iCloud account
2. Make sure that you are on the same WiFi network
3. Check on your iPhone that your iCloud email is enabled in the Messages app: Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your iCloud account if it is not active yet.
4. On your Mac open the Messages app and go to settings, this should trigger the paring process
5. Type on your iPhone in the "Text Message Forwarding prompt" the code generated on your Mac

To SMS someone you have to do this via the Messages app on OS X, not via the Contacts application.
